Meet Aurelia Amora Encora No.1 – Limited Edition Collector’s Art Doll

Meet Aurelia Amora Encora No. 1

Aurelia is a Collector’s Art Doll – first of my new “Amora Encora” range – a limited edition of One of a Kind (OOAK) dolls made using up-cycled materials to celebrate the beauty of the natural world.

Amora Encora AE01 Aurelia

Amora Encora is a certificated, limited range of art dolls – only 50 will ever be made. Each comes with her own certificate of origin. Aurelia celebrates the beauty of Autumn. Her name is of Hungarian origin, meaning “gold”.

Aurelia - Celebrating the Beauty of Autumn

The beauty of the natural world is always a source of inspiration for me.  I have so many ideas collected in my mind for the Amora Encora range, but to celebrate the beauty of Autumn seems like a very good place to start?

October is such a lovely “plump” month?  You can feel the richness and the warmth of it as you articulate every syllable?  As you reach for an extra layer, stroke your rediscovered favourite jumper, enjoy the warmth of a fireside and start thinking about buttered crumpets and toffee apples, let’s celebrate all that is so very lovely about Autumn.

As I work on expanding the Amora Encora range to the limit of 50 collector’s item dolls, I aim to take the opportunity to showcase a wide variety of the textile art techniques I use to create the dolls on this site.  I want to share the creative process and the learning opportunity as widely as possible.

My hope is that these posts will gradually build into a useful reference library that can be dipped into whenever the need for creative inspiration arises.  If I can inspire you to set aside some time to have a go at some of the techniques and create your own little piece of artwork, then my job, as they say, is done.

Aurelia Amora Encora No. 1 - Techniques Used

Aurelia is based on a pattern created by Patti Medaris Culea that I have used to create previous dolls and that I really enjoy making up.  You can read about my creative journey with Patti’s patterns on my previous posts – click on the images below to find out more.

Fabric Printing/Dyeing

Aurelia Amora Encora"No. 1
Aurelia - Body Fabric - Hand Printed - "Before"

I made Aurelia’s body from a remnant of hand printed fabric I found in my donations box.  It was just perfect – covered in Autumn leaves!  In future posts, I will explore this technique in more detail, hand printing my own fabric and sharing the process with you.

For now, I was content with the print I had – but it needed to be orange for a doll celebrating Autumn.  I used a tiny amount of orange Dylon due to colour the fabric – see right.  In future posts, I will explore the use of natural dyes.

Appliqué with Free Motion Embroidery

I used a Gemini Die Cutting Machine to make the golden leaves that decorate Aurelia’s skirt.  A small quantity of donated gold ribbon and  gold leaf organza fabric was perfect for shimmering leaves.  You can read more about the wonders of the Gemini on my previous posts.

Once cut, I used repositionable spray fabric glue to attach the leaves to the skirt and free motion embroidery to stitch them securely in place, sewing with a gold thread top and bottom.

Quilting

For a doll celebrating the beauty of Autumn, quilts just had to be involved.  I love the bolero pattern, but it was time to give it a twist and make a little quilted one.

I traced around the leaf die onto tissue paper and free motion embroidered the gold leaves over the top of the bolero fabric, with a piece of batting sitting beneath it to give the cosy quilted feel.

Aurelia Amora Encora No.1 - Hair from Recycled Sari Silk

Aurelia’s hair is made from recycled sari silk.  I just love the natural look of this yarn and the myriad of colours in it – and the fact that something that was made of natural materials and once cherished by someone is finding a new purpose in life.

Aurelia’s skirt trim is made from an old sarong that I no longer wear.  The bright orange colour of it made it the perfect addition to a doll celebrating the beauty of Autumn?

I collect beads from all sorts of places.  I am often given necklaces/bracelets that – on their own – appear to be quite ugly and you can see why their owners no longer have a use for them. When I pick them apart and sort the beads into colour and size, then they become transformed into useful materials for projects like the Amora Encora range.  So much more interesting than buying new beads?

The beautiful trim on Aurelia’s quilted bolero and her shoes is Stef Francis trim – donated by my good friend Julia.  Some friends know just how to make me happy – and I love it when they share as generously as this!
